Did Kamal Rub The Malayali Actor’S Guild The Wrong Way?
Kamal Haasan, in a recent interview to a national daily, has said that he frames all the letters written to him by his mentor director K Balachander. The two of them are lifetime members in a mutual admiration club and never fail to praise the other when an opportunity presents itself. Kamal’s office is full of those rare letters framed neatly. The actor had reportedly told that KB writes to him only when he thinks that he deserves it and hence he affectionately refers to those letters as his degrees. KB’s first appreciation letter to Kamal was in 1977 after he watched his performance in 16 Vayadinile. Recently, the director could not make it to the felicitation function held for Kamal by the Kerala Government. To make up for it, KB had sent a long letter showering accolades on him. Meanwhile the Malayali film actors association which goes under the name AMMA had decided to ask it members not to attend the celebrations. The reason is not quite clear but the association cleverly provided an escape route by allowing its members to attend the function in their individual capacities and not as members of AMMA. What does that signify?
