How Is Kamal’S ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’ Becoming ‘A Common Man’?
Copying a Hollywood movie or should we say making a film inspired by a Hollywood movies has been around for many years. That was one way of explaining away Copyright issues. But now for a change it was recently announced that Kamal Haasan would soon be making his Hollywood debut with Barrie Osborne who made ‘The Lord of the Rings’. He says he hopes to tell an Indian story in Hollywood style. Yes you heard it right; not Bollywood or Kollywood style but Hollywood style. Kamal’s much acclaimed film ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’ is being remade in English as ‘A Common Man’ featuring Academy winner Ben Kingsley in the lead. Yet another noted British actor Ben Cross has also been roped in to reprise the role that Mohanlal did in the Tamil film. ‘Unnaipol…’ by the way was originally made in Bollywood as ‘A Wednesday’, which was directed by Neeraj Pandey and starred Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah. ‘A Common Man’ is being directed by the Sri Lankan filmmaker Chandran Rutnam, who while adapting the original concept, has turned it around into a high voltage suspense thriller. While Shruti Haasan was credited with the music for the Tamil version, Rutnam has opted for music composer Ramesh Vinayagam.
