‘Colour Photo’, the story of a ‘below average’ guy

My personal experiences inspired project, says Sai Rajesh, on the Telugu film starring Suhas and Chandini

In the teaser of Colour Photo, actor Suhas tells Chandini that if a guy like him were to romance someone like her, his own friends would poke fun and call the couple ‘black and white’, ‘gulab jamun and rosagulla’… Fresh on the heels of making viewers laugh in Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya, Suhas headlines this romance with screenplay and direction by Sandeep Raj, based on the story by Sai Rajesh who has co-produced the film. This film is Suhas’s first as a male protagonist and takes a closer look at the skin-deep issue.

The statement ‘based on a true story’ evokes curiosity and when asked, Sai Rajesh says that “nearly 70% of the story” is based on happenings in his life. His story had a happy ending, he married the woman of his dreams: “It took me two years to gather courage and express my feelings to her. She immediately agreed, which made me wonder why I hesitated so much.”

This was in the 90s. Growing up, Sai Rajesh was made to feel conscious of his looks by those around him. His confidence took a beating, he thought he was too dark and not handsome. “Boys who are made to feel they are ‘below average’ will relate to this film,” he says.

Colour, caste discrimination

“Colour Photo is set in the mid-90s in Machilipatnam. Colour and caste discriminations are among the things discussed in the film. A lot of my experiences have gone into the story, and the rest is dramatised,” says Sai Rajesh. A chunk of the dramatisation lies in the antagonist’s part, played by actor Sunil.

Colour Photo is one of the first stories Sai Rajesh wanted to narrate as an aspiring filmmaker. A love for cinema made him move to Hyderabad from Nellore, and from 2005 to 2011, he was one among hundreds of aspirants hoping to get a toehold in cinema: “I took up a data entry job and would spend a few hours each day typing study materials and questions papers. The money I made through this, along with the support of my friends who knew my passion for cinema, kept me going.”

Maanaadu

Maanaadu is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action-political thriller drama film written and directed by Venkat Prabhu[2] and produced by Suresh Kamatchi, starring Silambarasan and Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead roles along with Bharathiraja, S. A. Chandrasekhar Karunakaran and Premgi Amaren in supporting roles.

It was initially said that Venkat Prabhu would be making a film with actor Silambarasan, which is touted to be Billa 3, the third franchise in the Billa series,[3] but later in June 2018 producer Suresh Kamatchi of V House Productions confirmed that his next venture that would have Silambarasan as the protagonist and this project will be directed by Venkat Prabhu.[4]

The latest big news that has become official is when Venkat Prabhu confirmed this news, announcing the title of the film as Maanaadu and this is a fresh script written by Prabhu himself based on politics. This film is all set commence shooting once Venkat Prabhu finishes putting the final touches on the script and zeroes in on the rest of the cast and crew. By then in early-July 2018, it is rumored that A.R. Rahman is in talks to compose music and P. C. Sreeram is likely to be the cinematographer.[5]

Later, actress Raashi Khanna was in talks to play the female lead,[6] while actress Kalyani Priyadarshan and editor Praveen KL confirmed their presence in the film.[7][8]

Yuvan Shankar Raja was officially confirmed to compose the music of the film.[9]

With this, an important update revealed that the film will be shot by Richard M Nathan while Stunt Silva will be the stunt choreographer. Meanwhile actor-director SJ Suryah is signed to play the lead antagonist, and actors Premgi Amaren, Manoj Bharathiraja, Bharathiraja, S A Chandrasekhar and Karunakaran are a part of the ensemble cast.

PASSWORD MOVIE REVIEW

Story: A cyber cell police officer attempts to track a criminal hacker, who is using information to destroy human lives, but finds himself caught in a web of violence, deceit and double-crossing. He forms a team of ethical hackers to get to the bottom of this dangerous game, but can he stop it before it’s too late?

Review: Director Kamaleshwar Mukherjee’s Password is an ambitious movie. It deals with a subject that is ultra-modern and hasn’t been seen on the Bengali big screen before. However, a meandering script, undecipherable technical jargon and poor pacing reduce it to a convoluted mess.

The primary problem lies with the fact that one cannot understand what is going on at any given point of the film. Sure, the characters try to explain the situation to the audience, but there is genuine doubt whether they themselves can understand it. In all the talk of the dark web, ethical hacking and covert surveillance, the message of the film (if there is one) gets lost.

Password has all the right masalas — a stellar cast, a director with experience of big-budget projects and a thumping soundtrack — but this is one film where the sum of its parts is lesser than the whole. Added to this are subplots of the Bhopal gas tragedy, a meaningless kidnapping, drug laundering and counterfeiting of currency. If you feel lost, you are not alone.

The actors themselves seem slightly confused about their roles, with the exception of Dev, who portrays a conventional good guy and can play this role in his sleep. Parambrata and Paoli as the ‘baddies’, do a commendable job, with their motivation slowly unfolding. Rukmini also shows growth as an actor. Scenes where she is being tortured seem ultra-realistic. But the character design of others leaves a lot to be desired. A primary character changes side from bad to good, good to bad and then back again to good many times. These twists and double crosses make an already long film even longer and further perplex the already-baffled viewer.

On the plus side, the music by Savvy is right on point, mixing techno and dubstep to match the tone of the film. The song Trippy Lage, sung by Nikhita Gandhi and Shashwat Singh, are sure to remain on the charts for long. The cinematography by Avik Mukhopadhyay is also pleasing to the eye. But you won’t be bothered by technical aspects (which are in good hands), as you will be too busy trying to make sense of the script. Overall, this is a film whose reach can’t exceed its grasp.

Lisaa Movie Review: Anjali’s horror film is a decent idea wasted

Anjali’s Lisaa abounds with jump scares and insipid comic scenes. Debutant director Raju Viswanath has a decent premise but he kills it with underwhelming execution.

Lisaa (Anjali) has a hard time convincing her single mother to accept a new life partner since she will be leaving for the US soon. But her mom, who is still guilty of leaving her parents for her deceased husband, is hesitant. Lisaa suggests that she will convince her grandparents, who live in some interior part of the Western Ghats. The first few minutes of the film are all about the unconvincing set-up that will lead Lisaa and her friend Jaggu (Sam Jones) to the bungalow of her grandparents. On top of it, we have a horrific comedy track featuring Brahmananda that has nothing to do with the film and there is Yogi Babu as well, who does his usuals.


Once Lisaa arrives at the bungalow, she finds her grandparents to be super weird. Her grandpa, with his uber-cool hairdo and deep voice, and grandma with a sinister look, suggest that something uncanny is going on in the bungalow. Located in some remote location that doesn’t have cellular network coverage, Lisaa and Jaggu are more or less trapped with these old weirdos. The two youngsters go through some scary experiences and are convinced that the house is haunted. And, when Anjali starts to doubt whether the old couple is really her grandparents, things escalate pretty fast.
